Karen Xie (pronounced Shay), Ph.D., is the first Vice President of Enterprise Architecture. She joined Blue Shield of California (BSC) in October 2014. As Chief Architect and technology strategist, Dr. Xie oversees the Enterprise Architecture discipline that brings engineering rigor to the design of the business. She manages all EA aspects including business, information, application and technology architectures. She also leads Software Quality Assurance and Release & Configuration Management.
Karen has 20+ years of experience in the healthcare industry. Prior to BSC, she was the Vice President of Architecture and Innovation at Trinity Health. At Trinity Health, she led the establishment of various programs including Enterprise Architecture, IT Innovation, Infrastructure Strategy & Planning, System Capacity Forecasting, Identity & Access Management, Network Security, Database Management & Application Development, QA & Stress Testing, Change Management, Performance Management, as well as 24x7 production support for EMR, Radiology PACS and Cardiology PACS systems.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Xie was a research scientist at Columbia University, New York, NY. She holds a Ph.D. Degree in Physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Massachusetts. She is the author of 20+ publications in the internationally renowned scientific journals in the research areas of novel semiconductor quantum structures, ultrahigh-speed electronics, nonlinear optics and optoelectronic devices.
Karen was born in Shanghai, China. She came to the U.S. for her graduate study in 1986. Currently living in Orange County, California, she is based out of BSC’s Costa Mesa office.
